Facing Fear

Facing Fear
Image result for fear

How much of your life has been dominated by fear? How often does fear step in and say ‘no don’t – it will make you look a fool or it is dangerous?’ Imagine if fear had turned up as you entered the birth canal. Imagine if it say – ‘no don't! - It's dangerous out there and that birth canal can squash your head. It is better that you stay in here, it is warm, it is safe.’ Hmmm and that is the moment life truly begins. We have the courage to be squashed and released into the world to experience life and what an experience it is. The thing is we all experience situations or circumstances that hurt us and we develop fears. Those fears accumulate over a life time. They make are concerned, they protect us but irrational fears inhibit us.

Now the reason that I write this is that while I was on holiday  in Thailand and faced one of my greatest fears, that fear had been caused by an incident 15 years ago. So let me give you an insight: it was 2001 Egypt, Sharm El Sheik to be exact. I had just completed my PADI open water diving exam and passed (yippee). Anyway my first dive as a diver proved to be an experience that I would not wish on anyone. While I was about fourteen meters down my air cut out. My buddy was a little ahead of me and it was at a time when there was not a spare breathing piece on each tank. At the time I knew that if I panicked it would result in death. I calmly swam to my buddy and let him know and we shared air and gradually ascended to the surface. However, I was concerned his air would run out too. The chatter inside my head went completely loopy saying things like ‘see don’t put yourself in danger.’ ‘You knew this would happen…’ Then the cycles of negative thoughts played round and round. Anyway we surfaced and made it back to the boat. I then heard tales where there had been far worse repercussions. After that experience was it a surprise that I did not go diving again?

So last week I was in Thailand with a great friend of mine who at the age of 56 is retraining as a dive instructor. This woman’s attitude to life is inspirational and nothing is impossible. She teaches people to fly gliders. So as part of our holiday we popped into a dive shop to arrange her next dive. She turned to me and said I am surprised you haven’t done your diving exams since you surf, paddleboard, row and basically want to be a mermaid. I said that I had and said I had lost my diving card. Well the chap typed in my name into the computer and there I was – PADI registered. I just needed to do a refresher. It was at that moment that I thought well I can run away from this or I can face this fear. I explained what had happened and that I had not dived since. The chap  was surprised and very sympathetic and said that he would make sure that I was given the most experienced and empathetic instructor.

The next day I went through my refresher and faced my fears, faced the voices of complete terror in my head and had the most spectacular dive. It was beautiful, I wondered why I had waited so long. The whole experience made me contemplate fear and its uses. It protects us, it keeps us safe and stops us sticking wet fingers in plug sockets. Yet there are other times it holds us back in life. It stops us truly experiencing. It also reveals the conversations in our heads that limit us. Now the funny thing was the night before the dive I asked myself the likelihood of the same situation repeating itself… If it did it would be uncanny. I also read the whole PADI open water  book in an evening. I then noticed that each breathing set had two mouth pieces. I would be diving with two people and an instructor - that in itself gave me three options if things went wrong. I have to say I felt much better once I had rationalised it all. I did email my parents and brother and told them I loved them just in case my number was up. It was not and I now love diving again!

With all the above in mind, what are your fears? What are you avoiding experiencing in life because of fear? What are the fears and how will you face them? I have to say by facing that fear I felt liberated and realised there was so much potential to experience. I then considered what other fears I should face. I then remembered that I had not been horse riding since my horse bolted and threw me onto an electric fence… Oh dear!

    Synchronicity... Life Really Is Fascinating...

Image result for flow of life
Have you ever had one of those moments where you literally step into the 'flow' of life? Where the strangest things happen in perfect timing. You say something and then a few seconds later what you have said appears before your eyes? The long weekend has been like that for me. A couple of my friends were literally astounded. I was walking along with two friends talking about Glasgow in Scotland, that is 456 miles from where I live. A second later a Glasweigen chap walked past and started playing the guitar as he walked backwards. He sang about being a Glasweigen, took a bow and then toddled off. There were no other people around my friends and I at the time. We could not believe it and laughed so hard because it was so surreal.

Image result for flow of life

Well the weekend continued in this manner: I mentioned to my brother that I wondered whether my bestfriend was back from holiday and a second later she text. He just looked bemused because I had just mention the synchronicity conversation too. I also have a chap at work who I have a laugh with. We think we are living in the Truman show. He works in a different department and basically no matter what time I decide to go for a break or lunch I will physically collide with him. We find it bizarre and hilarious. We have decided we have psychic bladders. Well I was telling my two friends about this situation and one of them said well next you will see him out of work... After I left my friends I was on the way back to my car and stopped off at a coffee shop. As I left the coffee shop - yes you guessed it - I collided with him. We could not believe it and found it astounding. I said I am going to have to check behind me all the time from now on.

    Image result for synchronicity

Of course these situations got me thinking because a lot of years ago I wrote a book (Labyrinthine) about synchronicity and timings. An androgenous being called a 'Connector' linked timings for people's lives and their fate. Unfortunately people started using their will to defy death, which caused tremors in the field. Those death defying people created numerous repercussions for other people's lives. This book came out on audio this year and one reviewer gave it a 1 star rating which did not do much for sales, as you can imagine.  After that I accepted that maybe people were not into synchronicity and that synchronicity itself did not want the world to read about it. I accepted defeat, did not take it personally and carried on writing my next books. Over the last year I did not think that much about synchronicity. Instead I had been heavily involved in work and 'making' things happen with my books. I was 'forcing' and 'willing'. I don't know about you but I am impatient and want everything now. This whole allowing things to unfold actually bored me... I know - naughty. I just don't see the point of waiting around for things to take place. Instead I prefer to go out there and get them.

HERE IS THE LINK TO LABYRINTHINE ON AUDIO. If you want to read a really rubbish review then please enjoy it: http://www.audible.com/pd/Sci-Fi-Fantasy/Labyrinthine-Audiobook/B011MZKFF6/ref=a_search_c4_1_1_srTtl?qid=1459194665&sr=1-1#publisher-summary

The above all ties in with a conversation I had with one of my friends on Friday. She is quite wafty and very 'connected' to life. She is amazing at creating things without even trying. She said to me that I was constantly planting seeds and digging them back up to see if they were growing. Admittedly she is right. She said it is time to just leave the seeds to germinate and allow life to show you when you are in the flow.... And guess what? This weekend was filled with all the lovely things that she talked about. However, the question arises then if these things just come to you - then why do you need to do anything?

    Insights and Wisdom from 2015

    Insights and Wisdom from 2015
Every year has its own flavour. Some years are as if you have accidentally eaten a whole chilli whereas other years have a sense of an ornate desert. This year has the flavour of a healthy smoothy with spinach, avocado and raspberry written all over it for me. It has been a year of plodding and slow and healthy insight. With this in mind here are five insights which may well inspire you or touch a chord within you.

    ·         There are amazing people out there. I often forget how amazing some people are and how humble they are with it. It is easy to be distracted by the endless idiots and aggressive types fixated on doing stupid things. Yet behind the scenes the amazing people, who are full of passion for creativity and their works/arts, simply contribute their brilliance to the world. Some gain recognition yet many others contribute in a small way and expect nothing. The point is there are amazing people who want to help others. I have attracted numerous editors, producers and great friends this year who have all demonstrated phenomenal talents and the fact they are great people. It gives me a sense of hope for humanity because if I shifted my focus to the idiots I have observed then I would wonder about the point of existence– especially with the likes of the chap that got his penis jammed in a diet coke bottle. Really!

    ·         Trust is a major thing for me: trust in life and trust in people. In my life I have met so many liars, con artists and those who misconstrue the truth to take advantage of people. Yet, back to the point above, there are genuine people out there who can be trusted and will openly demonstrate their trust. I always viewed them as vulnerable, yet that vulnerability is actually openness. They have dropped their defensive Armor to fully engage in life no matter what.  Those wonderful people have helped me develop my own trust in them, in my life and in my self. The more I trust in the process of life, the more the process astounds me and reveals new avenues that I would never have expected. You begin to realise that life has a process of unfolding that you will never be in control of and that unfolding has to run in a certain sequence. By trusting it you allow it. When you do not trust it – it is as if you get in the way of you.

    ·         Nutrition and how you effective you are according to the food in your system, has been a massive learning. It was simple – increase water, take flax oil, eat blended veg in smoothies and get rid of sugar and coffee. Sounds simple doesn’t it? Well when you have a migraine for a week when you don’t have coffee and another for two weeks when you stop the sugar then that is when you realise how sugar and coffee have saturated your system. The big learning this year is that when I shifted my nutrition to fresh veg, clean protein and no sugar my whole attitude shifted. I felt happy, I felt everything was possible and stopped getting colds. I had the energy to work full time, write books, work on the audio books and reach my ultimate fitness. Nutrition is now paramount for me and this year I will refine further to find a way to be energised and relaxed.

    ·         Intuition has upped her game. How many times have you ignored that little voice or that weird feeling in your gut to find out later on that it was right? Well this year I allowed myself to listen to my intuition and so far it has been spot on. It has resulted in meeting the right people and knowing when to leave the wrong people to it. Intuition is something that our rapid-paced culture overlooks but the point is intuition works faster than the conscious mind and figures things out at a greater rate. So why would we ignore it? Intuition is something I now embrace because it is a fundamental part of us and it strangely enables us to ‘know’ what to do without endlessly thinking. Intuition saves me time and energy.

    ·         Love has been a fascinating insight this year. A lot of my external world, like most people, has always been validated by approval in the form of praise, results, relationships and rewards. Many have the inner dialogue that does this ‘I will only be good enough when I am… or when I have… or when I have achieved…’ Yet when you shift into your own internal world and ask yourself why do you need someone to love you – then the answer comes back because you aren’t loving yourself enough. I learned that expecting others to love you is hypocritical if you are not demonstrating love to yourself.

It might sound vain or wafty but loving your self can be demonstrated to your self by doing the simplest of things like nurturing the self, looking after the self and allowing yourself time to be with yourself. Back to this high-paced, high pressured world that want us to appear as though everything is okay… Well all the ‘doing’ is pointless if it means that you ‘break’ your self.  All the chasing of ideals is pointless because they are in the future. We only actually exist in the now and loving yourself now – ‘no matter what’ is liberating. Try saying this to yourself and see what happens ‘I love my self no matter what…’ That is a true declaration of self love because we often will only allow ourselves to love ourselves when we have achieved something or received approval for something. These small insights have resulted in a wonderful, yet quite gentle year. I hope by sharing these that you too may have some insights to share. If so then please comment below.

The Nature of People - What is your Nature?

    The Nature of People...

This week has been a week of learning because we all respond to situations in very different ways according to our natures. Consider this situation: It is Christmas and your team mates are all off along with your manager and the only person left is you. However you look at the list of items you are scheduled for on that day and you see that you have not got a single break or chance to go the bathroom in eight hours. How do you react?

This is the situation some of my colleagues have been stuck in and it was actually fascinating watching the response. Some people just got on with it and accepted it was just one day. Another said they were going to phone in sick. Another simply said they would avoid dealing with the situation. Where as me, the usual rebel, would go to the source and demand alternatives whilst referencing H.R. policies. This is when I realised that there was something going on.

During the week I could not help think about people's natures because some of the people I work with are amazingly intelligent and hard workers yet they are so laid back. When I say laid back nothing affects them. They could be in a meeting room and a hornets nest might randomly drop in and there would be no arm flailing; instead, they would get on with their work.

The way some people were so calm perplexed me. So much so that I even asked whether inside they were as calm as they were on the outside and the answer was yes. They just said it was their nature. It was then I realised my 'nature' was firey, energetic, motivated and confrontational. I had spent years trying to suppress what I was; however, it was my nature and that made me passionate, driven, direct and forceful. Then something popped into my head. One of my good friends, a therapist, had been to a Chinese elemental workshop on the nature of the five elements that make up people's natures. You may well find the below interesting because it might provide an insight into your elemental nature along with the benefits and the hindrances. Enjoy!

    Fire Natures

The Magician or Wizard who Socialise, Network and Market
Fire is masculine and known as yang in character. The direction that is moves is upwards and energetically expansive. Fire natures are associated with persistence, strength, power and passion yet one of their main hindrances is restlessness.

The character of fire is warm, excitable and filled with enthusiasm and creativity. The negative expression turns up in impulsive behaviours, aggression and impatience. Fire drives you to find the passion to create your life's calling. It is filled with joy, laughter, humour, mischief and playfullness. To identify a fire nature you will notice charm, humour, mischief, excitability, huge energy and drive. They  hate being bored, adapt to change and seem to charge through life at an unprecedented rate. The only thing they really hate is hate because that is their negative emotion which is counter-balanced by joy.

    Earth Natures

    Negotiators, mediators and recruiters
Ying and Yang balance within the Earth nature. Earth combines both elements of masculine and feminine. The energetic motion moves inwards and centres because it a stabilising energy that conserves. Earth natures are thoughtful, stable, patient, practical and hard working. They are nurturing, help others grow and bring harmony and stability to most situations. Their downfall is stubbornness, selfishness and self-centredness yet their ambition, responsibility and capacity for long-term planning is a nature that is certainly needed. These natures are nurturing, warm, kind and supportive even if they have difficulty establishing boundaries because they can be taken advantage of. This results in worry with is counter balanced by empathy.

    Metal Natures

The transformer, the alchemist, the lawyer and the judge
Yin is the dominant character in Metal natures, which is feminine. The inward motion of the energy is contracting. The metal element embodies the crystals and mineral realm too. Metal natures enable the breath of life and connect to that experience to enable understanding of self-worth. Metal natures carry deep respect others and themselves. They are ambitious, focused and have clarity of thought; yet metal is a rigid structure, so can be unyielding, belligerent, powerful whilst being determined. The metal natures like minimalism, order, cleanliness and are well contained. They don't like to admit they can be controlling, a little too forceful and set in their ways. The good that comes from this is self-reliance although they tend to handle their problems alone. Their pride will stop them asking for help. Their inner sadness arrives in the form of grief which is offset by a huge amount of courage.

    Water Nature

The idealist, philosopher, psychologist, thinker, innovator and entrepreneur
The stillness of the feminine energy that moves downwards is revealed in the conserving water nature. Water is filled with intelligence, adaptability and wisdom. Water is soft and yet fluid in motion yet can be incredibly powerful in terms of floods and storms.
Water natures reveal great resources in terms of tranquil energy, time, and financial ordering. There is a calm approach to financial handling which is neither misery or spontaneous in spending. Water is insightful, still, full of wisdom and rejuvenating which provides mental possibility that result in innovation. Great ideas come from calm tranquillity.

Depending on how the water nature responds to the world, they are usually a little eccentric, a bit reserved and very creative. They can come across as calculating, introverted and not that bothered. The thing is they are watching and evaluating because fear permeates their being yet calm tranquillity off-sets this.

    Wood natures

Adventurers, Pioneer,  strategists, directors and analysts.

The dominant energy here is  yang masculine where strength is combined with flexibility. The nature of wood unites generosity, idealism and leadership. The wood nature leads, takes charge and reveals a determined plan of action. The journey of wood seeks to grow, expand and establish its stability. Wood is sensual and evolving and demonstrates its prowess in spring time.

The nature of wood is assertive, direct and driven. They often have a temper, are outgoing, love socialising but a little insensitive. They do have a tendency to put their foot in it. The Wood natures suffer from the negative emotion anger which can be countered with kindness. One of their main virtues is their patience combined with altruism.

Well this was quite a finding for me. Of course this is not a definitive guide because we are all made up of all the elements. However; I hope you enjoyed it. If you have any comments please post below.
