Dinosaur distraction and the art of focus!

There are not many people who can use a dinosaur as an excuse to be distracted from writing or an excuse for procrastination; however, I have evidence. After releasing Elora, The One-Winged- Fairy, I thought I would move straight into editing the next book in the line. I have to admit it is such a pleasure being on garden leave because I have the time to complete and release my backlog of books before moving into my new career.  As much as I enjoy being able to edit at home, sitting in a cafĂ© watching the world for inspiration is a nice way in which to progress the next works.

So there I am in deep thought, and somewhat amused by the fact I wrote a book about a blooming fairy, I look up and there we have it: a dinosaur in the shopping arcade. Of course people would assume it is an over-active imagination. I guess people have been sectioned for less. Imagine all those children who would say to their parents - look there is a dinosaur shopping and their parents would dismiss it as 'the imaginary friend syndrome gone prehistoric!' Admittedly it is random to witness such a phenomenon. Is it a sign? Maybe I will write a book about dinosaurs next... I certainly had not planned on writing a fairy book. I hope I don't get creatively 'haunted' by a Tyrannosaurus Rex! Imagine waking up in the night to a phantom dinosaur saying 'you must write about me!' In that half-awake state herds of dinosaurs buying hats to protect them from the sun pop up all over the bedroom... I won't go off on a creative rant; however, ideas come from everywhere and this just shows that sometimes you just have to look up from the laptop to have inspiration arrive.

Change your Book Cover and Increase Your Sales?

Change Your Book Cover and Increase Your Sales?

Image result for book cover sayings

Can changing the cover of your book really increase sales? Well the last couple of weeks I have been a little quiet on the blogging front because I have been concentrating on finishing my current book and marketing my other books. I had a rather lovely synchronicity whereby my friend had figured out how to market his company's health products to the world. In doing so he managed to completely wipe out all of their stock. What a success story eh? So after excelling at that marketing challenge, he decided he would like to see whether his formula worked on books. Yep and you guessed it - I am the experiment. I do like being an experiment in marketing - especially when it my money being invested rather than the budgeting resource of a company.

So how we went about it was go to Amazon Ad Sense. We created an advertising campaign using my top selling book. We started the campaign and registered the number of impressions according to key words. We then counted how many clicks are made on a key word and which key words generated the most clicks. Take for example my LOVE HUNT - The Love Game. This was listed under romance, contemporary romance, love, dating etc. All these key words are linked to your book and when a book in your genre is being looked at, yours joins a queue to be listed as relevant. When your book is noticed and the customer clicks on your book, that is when you are charged a small fee. The fee is based on a bidding process. In actual fact it is all quite simple: basically every time your advert is clicked upon you are charged. You can set an advertising budget each day which once it is reached your advert will no longer appear. That means you can invest as little as a few dollars each day to advertise your books to a specific target audience, according to your key words. In the case of LOVE HUNT - THE LOVE GAME - the most impressions and clicks were made by those who were looking up romance or contemporary romance.  The romance market is huge and one of the most popular so it was not a surprise that this was the 'big clicker!'
Image result for romance

So how does this relate to a change of cover?
Well there has to be a reason that a customer potentially clicks on your book. What makes your book stand out against the others that are lined up to advertise at that very same customer? Well it is the cover and the 'strap line.' So I have to be honest my click rate was failing dismally. After 32,000 impressions, where customers had my book appear on the page, I had a whole - are you ready for this - 9 clicks! They did not result in sales. So I was affectively advertising and getting no response. Boooo!

Admittedly it takes time for a sales campaign to kick in; however, something has to make the 'customer' want it now. People don't have time to return to a book they might have seen briefly and they certainly don't retain the title unless it is astounding! So what do you do? You make a cover which screams click on me. So here is my 'before' cover - I quite liked this one...

I thought it was clean, quirky and to the point. According to my marketing pal it needed to appeal to the 'romance market' and stand out as fun, mischievous and girly. Hmmmm!
So this is the new cover:

Yes it is very pink!!!! Very, very pink! The thing is I then had to change the second in the series too from:
I really liked this one too. I liked how clean it was...
So this then was changed to:

Again - it is VERY PINK!

So guess what happened? The number of impressions continued at the same rate and the click rate increased. What do you think happened with the sales? There was a gradual increase. So what did that mean? Well, it meant that my blurb had to change. I know... Something was stopping people going 'yeh! now! Now and NOW!' Also my friend said that the reader wanted to discover something: an insight.

So take a look - this is how it was:

Come on admit it - as much as we deny it - we ladies like a good love hunt.
We have tick lists, ideals, and we hunt in high-heeled packs. Of course, we're all hunting for that elusive right man who ticks every box and even has tidy nostril hair. Okay maybe not you, but you know other ladies who love the hunt.

Well, it's time for Eva and Gracie to love hunt, and their 'targets' are rich men - the golden sperm. Such exciting escapades would provide the pair with entertaining discussions during their dull office hours - or so they thought. What they did not anticipate was the discovery of the "booby man"; humorous but very hard truths about wealth, themselves, power; and the RichIdiot.com phenomenon.
The question remains: can love really be hunted?

So what do you think happened? Honestly I have no clue how life works....
Well the audio sales went up! Admittedly Helen is a fantastic narrator and her Russian accent is brilliant, I just have not quite figured out how that has worked. Also what is also interesting is there is a higher level of sales in the U.K. than the U.S.

My friend Matt says that is because the U.K. has 11 5 star reviews whereas the U.S. have not been placing so many reviews. Again I wonder why that is. So in answer to the question - Can changing your cover increase your sales? Most definitely; however, there are other factors such as 'strap line and your blurb.' If you manage to combine the perfect formula then you have a potentially winning advertising campaign! YEY!!!!

Good luck. I hope this helps all the other lovely authors out there who are also attempting to figure the marketing puzzle out. If I find out anything else I will definitely share. If you have any comments or findings please could you add them to the comments. I would love other authors to have an easier journey to making a living from the book market!

Oh and I just worked out why the audio sales went up - the audio is on at £3.99 rather than £15.69

If I had not written this blog I would never have figured it out. So that is why the audio sales increased because the advert worked - the customer just happened to explore further. The only problem now is how do I change the audio cover? Any ideas?

When the Reviews roll in...

When The Reviews Roll In...

Imagine working for years on a book and then finally it is ready to be released to the world. All that love and attention, all those hours of work have finally culminated in your creation and now... and yes now.... oh God you have to release it to the world. That moment for many authors is what makes them stick. All their fears and sense of it not being good enough rise to the surface. The tormenting feelings of doubt gnaw away at their stomachs. They justify not releasing it to the world and then imagine the worst: a top critic destroys their creation in a public humiliation. That feeling can be likened to being found sitting naked on a toilet in a public place...

So my author and reader friends there is a moment where that book has to be released into the world. There will be critics, not everyone is going to love it and who cares? The point is your creation exists and there will be people who are touched by your work. There will be those who love it and there will be those who think it is awful. The point is once you have created your work free it like a dove and let the world find you. Reviews will come in, some will be good and some will be terrible. You can't change that. My advice is do not dwell on the terrible reviews, instead get on and write your next book. The way that I look at it is that if someone takes the time to write a terrible review then at least you have 'touched' them in some sense.

The other advice I would give is that do not dwell on negative feedback. Take it objectively and consider what is said and then ask whether you can use it to improve. That is the most positive way to transform any form of negativity. Grow a flower from the shyte....

So far this week I have had two five star reviews and of course that has put a smile on my face. In the next couple of weeks the reviewers will get hold of The Hairy Legged Mystery and Tingle Dingle and The Little Mischiefs. When I first put myself out there, around six years ago, I was a nervous wreck... like all things you become used to it. The more books your write, the less you are affected by reviews because you have moved on to the next one...

When things come from nowhere...

When things come from nowhere!

Have you had one of those moments where you think what next? Well I had one of those this week. I completed the draft of a book about money. My intentions is to help people manage their money. My dream would be for a world where people are not enslaved to paying off credit cards and mortgages... I loved writing it and it is now in brewing phase before editing. So then I thought I will have a little rest and said to the my self and the 'universe' what next.... Within a day it was answered. My proof reader came to me with a slip of paper with a writing competition on it. It was a competition for books written for 5-7 year olds. I only have written two of this kind and my agent is taking those to the Bologna book fair in April to show a few publishers. Anyway back to the story. It seems that when one asks one has to be aware of how answers come in quite different ways. When I was provided with the brief to write a mystery for 5 to 7 year olds, my mind went in all directions with the potential. I have learned not to just jump on the mind churn bandwagon; instead, I allow the unconscious to come up with a full story. The following morning I sat down and wrote the first third with a full image in my mind. It was just lovely to write something for children because it is so much fun. It takes you back into all the phases of wonder and the mischief. I have since written three other stories just for the fun of it.  I am not going to say any more but if you desire a prompt to write your own 5-7 year old mystery...

PROMPT:
The strangest thing happened when....

Enjoy!

CHAPTER 1

Introduction

What do you want to write? That is the first place to start. It is a simple question; however, there are so many options and so many genres that making this decision is paramount before putting finger to keyboard. One of the best ways to determine precisely what you want to create is to make a mind map. To do this take a piece of paper and write the question ‘what do I want to write?’ From this little bubble make arrows and boxes, then once you have an arrangement of boxes decide what the priority is by creating a list. At number 1 write your top priority and list the other writings in order.

Another way to discover what you wish to create is to free write, which is where you simply write a statement and respond to it by writing as fast as you can without actually consciously thinking. The outcome is often quite a surprise.

With this in mind, I would use the following statement to enable the free-flow:

I want to write…. (this is your prompt) now write as fast as you can until you have nothing left.

Quite often students want to write lots of things and become caught up in all the potentials. They then write nothing because there are too many options. I call this the asteroid syndrome where all the ideas are floating around the students’ heads but they remain in space until one lands.

When you complete this prompt notice all the potential pieces that you wish to write then make a priority order in a list. Decide on the first project and then take action. When I say action – I mean begin. As obvious as it seems, to write one has to actually write. Writing is not walking around thinking about it, it is not doing the washing up, the cleaning or phoning a friend. Writing is sitting down and writing.

A few little things to consider about what you wish to write. Writing a memoir or a life story is the opportunity to step into yourself, reflect upon your life and share it with others. This type of writing is based on reality, the experienced, a history and a series of events that have been interpreted by the person whose life it is. Writing a memoir or personal life story is the prime opportunity to re-live, remember, re-experience and possibly even resolve life events. Through writing a memoir or life story not only are you sharing who you are and your experiences, you are enabling yourself a catharsis - a way in which to process events. Through writing your life story you will re-visit situations from a new perspective. You may even notice that you have changed in your approach and perception as you have matured.

Constructing a memoir will involve writing from reality. To gain clarity one may reference old journals, diaries or letters to remind the writer what has taken place. This style of writing is classed as writing from reality because it references actual events, real people and that which has actually taken place. Writing from reality is often known as non-fiction which covers: newspaper stories, editorials, personal accounts, journal articles, textbooks, legal documents and documentary.

Fiction, on the other hand, is imagined; however, it can be built from real life people, places and events. Fiction stories, although constructed from the imagination, are often written to suggest that the story is real. The author often writes the story by researching, imagining and referencing through research. Fiction covers poems, stories, plays, novels, film scripts and dramas.

In addition, fiction is commonly divided into three areas. This division comes from the general appearance of the text:

  • Stories and novels are made up of prose usually which follow the usual paragraph structure. The story is then divided into chapters
  • Poetry consists of lines of varying length. Sometimes there is rhyme, other times there is simply a rhythm within the construct.
  • Plays/scripts consist of spoken lines, stage/television directions. The play is arranged in scenes and acts.

If you think about it, the difference ultimately comes from the mind – the imagined versus the remembered/experienced.

Some of the best advice that I have been given is to write about what you know. The question then becomes what do we really know? Where does reality stop and fiction begin – is there a blur? When we write fiction we often take aspects of what we know, our reality, and combine the realistic ingredients to create a story. There is a fine line between what we remember, our reality and using what we have experienced to generate fictions. With this in mind, have you noticed that you and a friend have different memories of the same event?

Try the following: Write a short piece or journal entry from memory using one of the following titles. Please choose an event or a situation where other people were involved.

·         The Biggest Challenge I Overcame

·         The Day My Life Changed

·         What I Never Expected

·         The Reason I Laughed So Hard

·         My Most Inspiring Moment

·         The Major Event!

Now I would like you to take your reality piece and consider the other people who were involved in the event. Considering who else was involved, step into their shoes and write the event from their point of view. What would they notice? How would they feel? How were they involved?

Now sit and imagine a random character, observe them and make a fiction story from the third person perspective.

·         The Ultimate Challenge

·         Life Changes

·         The Most Unexpected Situation

·         A Reason To Laugh

·         A Moment Of Inspiration

·         A Little Bit Awkward

·         Their Major Event.

At this point you will notice that maybe one style of writing is easier. Now we are ready to consider style and voiceJ
