The Lost and The Found

The Lost and The Found

Have you ever worked really hard on something only to have it disappear never to be seen again?
Have you ever had that gut-wrenching feeling that something you loved creating would never see the light of day? This is what happened to me about ten years ago. I changed from using a mac to a pc (I know). My old mac died and the plug converter broke. Since it was such an old school mac I could not find another converter. When that mac died it took with it around six years of writing. Imagine  if you had spent two years writing a book and three of those were lost which added up to six years worth of work. What made it worse was five scripts also disappeared into dead digital ether. Yes I did do back up files; however, this was at a time when windows could not convert to the coding effectively and I ended up with pages of what appeared to be Greek letters. What made it worse was that I had put my heart and soul into those three books.

Well after my holiday in Thailand, I had a real craving for one of the books. To the point that I considered writing the whole thing again from scratch. It is odd really because a book is part of you until you release it to the world. It is only by experiencing completion, that you feel free to move on. I don't know whether this happens for other authors. These three books have been niggling me over the last year. They have been lurking in my unconscious desiring completion. What could I do?

Well the last couple of weeks I have been off work with Deep Vein Thrombosis. The advice was to keep moving rather than sit around. So in my time off,  which I don't have that much of, I decided on simplicity. On holiday I had read about Simplicity and it resonated to the point where it felt like the way forwards. So what did I do? I cleared and cleaned and then cleared some more. There was such a sense of release and I feel I have developed anti-stuffism. Think about it - what does an author really need? So while I was clearing out I found my old back up C.D's and gazed upon them sadly. I considered just binning them; however, I thought I would put them on my old laptop and transfer the files to my hard drives. I then looked at the files and thought - I should give conversion one last try. My old files were CWK files which I wanted as DOCS. Well I typed this into Google and a fabulous chap had miraculously provided a step by step guide and guess what? They all converted almost perfectly. Honestly the joy I felt about resurrecting those books and knowing they could be completed and released was beyond comprehension. I felt as though I had had a huge lottery win. I know.... I literally jumped around with joy because I had loved writing those books. There was one in particular that was such a fun book. So now I simply have to do a final edit and three more of my fun fictions can enter the digital publishing world. That in itself is completion and I often wonder whether these books purposely chose to be dormant. The reason I say this was that one of the books talks about survival (it's a children's book) and over the last five years my brother has become obsessed with survival skills. He talks endlessly about it. So much so I could probably survive on a remote island through his repetitious conditioning. I even purchased a fire stick just in case... Yep - I really did that and it still resides amongst my minimalist possessions. So all that he has talked about can be written into the book before release. With all that is mind I am celebrating... the discovery of my lost novels and the release of THE HAIRY-LEGGED MYSTERY, which comes out tomorrow.
In celebration of all of the above - I have put my Kindle books on COUNTDOWN DEALS from the 25th May 2016 Yipee!

Oh and the cover for The Hairy-Legged Mystery:

FUN!!!!

A Bit of News and A Wedding Speech to Deliver

One Wedding Speech to Make for my Best Friend!

Today is a big day. I am making a wedding speech in a ceremony for my best friend. There is somewhat of a magic feel about this because this week has been quite a week. The Short Course in Creative Writing came out in paperback, along with Love Hunt 1 - Dating Game. Then to make the world an even better place Love Hunt - Dating Game came out in audio. Honestly, I know I wrote it; the thing is Helen Lloyd has created something spectacular! I am so proud of how she managed to switch between a Russian accent and an English accent.

So it seems the theme for the following week is love. With that in mind, I have decided to re-arrange my book-sharing schedule and will post 5 chapters of Love Hunt with some audio samples. This book has been my top seller and has had the most discussion at work. I guess it is something that we can all identify with - relationships, the hunt for love and the strange behaviours that people experience on the journey to find their perfect mate. The thing is while I was writing Love Hunt my best friend endured all the stories with me. She was shocked, horrified and delighted on numerous occasions. While I scaled the numerous obstacle courses in pursuit of love destiny delighted my best friend. When one of my other rowing crew and I spotted a chap that suited her at a rowing party. We created a cunning plan, made them talk to each other and then as all best friends do - we abandoned them! Yes we warned him that if anything happened a team of Amazonian warriors would pursue him and hunt him down.. Now, a few years later I get to share the story in front of all their loved ones. It is so wonderful that destiny bought them together and now on this day of their love - my Love Hunt book has arrived in audible. Happy? Gosh - joy!

Come on admit it - as much as we deny it - we ladies like a good love hunt.
We have tick lists, ideals, and we hunt in high-heeled packs. Of course, we're all hunting for that elusive right man who ticks every box and even has tidy nostril hair. Okay maybe not you, but you know other ladies who love the hunt.
Well, it's time for Eva and Gracie to love hunt, and their "targets" are rich men - the golden sperm. Such exciting escapades would provide the pair with entertaining discussions during their dull office hours - or so they thought. What they did not anticipate was the discovery of the "booby man"; humorous but very hard truths about wealth, themselves, power; and the RichIdiot.com phenomenon.
The question remains: can love really be hunted?

An Amazing Week!!!

This week has been quite amazing really. Labyrinthine came out on audio, numerous reviewers took on both Money Farm and Labyrithine to review. At the same time sales increased and word of mouth began. I have had some wonderful emails asking how I came up with the ideas in the books. That would be telling!!!

The Office Zoo and a Short Course in Creative Writing made it through the quality control processes and will reach audio in the next couple of weeks. Love Hunt has been recorded now and being audio edited in France. So the writing is progressing!!! Yipee. Yes it is time for a little dance.

On Monday I went back to work after my 3 week holiday and stimulated the corporate blog with my bizarre humour. I was not allowed to post a film of goats riding horses. It was not corporate enough. When I suggested we put the goats in suits I received 'one of those looks'. I was also invited into a creative project which is creative and innovative. Hopefully I will be able to get sign off on space ship drones and specially designed balloons to replicate planets so that I can build a helium solar system in our corporate atrium. I will be honest I was happy to go back to work routine, although I started reading the book the 4 hour week. It has made me re-evaluate how I approach work and why do we all accept 9-5 as the 'norm'? In addition I intend to be more efficient so that I can have more 'fun' time.

Oh and I was asked the question this week: why don't I just work as an author?
Answer: Where do you get your material if you don't interact? The work place has an abundance of characters, mad incidents and fun stories. How else do you think I could have compiled all the characters in The Office Zoo? Reality is often far better as reference than reality.  What's more, twelve years ago, when I worked in a bookshop, I was given some excellent advice by an author: don't give up your day job unless you have paid off your mortgage and have the earning capacity of 5K a month and 100K in the bank. This came from an author who had received a huge advance, had her work hyped and was labelled the next J.K. Rowling. She sold around 40,000 books in total and her second book did not make sales and she was dropped. If she had given up her job then where would she be?

Feeling Proud? Self-celebration, the Bottomy Dance and its Benefits!

Let me guess the 'Bottomy Dance' in the title made you curious... Smirk! Okay this is not going to be a monumental post of great epiphany. Instead, it is a simple suggestion for self-celebration. The thing is - how often do you stop and allow yourself to feel proud of yourself? How often do you allow yourself to let go and do a random bottomy dance that involves a lot of posterial shaking to celebrate all the hard work and hours you have put into something that means a lot to you? Let me guess - not enough?

This is it - when we work hard then how do we actually reward ourselves? So many of my friends work and work. They reach their goals and do not pause and take in their achievements; instead, they simply construct the next goal and start working towards that. Where is the motivation to succeed? With that attitude there is an endless treadmill of work, goal achievement and then more work. The way I see it is that life is more than work. So surely the pleasure is in the celebration. When you achieve something that is great for you then why not pause, feel proud, shake your behind and enjoy that moment?

I have noticed the world is in a state of continued rush. It grows faster and more complex day on day. In this state of rush we do not take time to 'sniff the roses'. Life, in my opinion, should not be a conveyor belt of achievement but contribution, celebration and shared moments of joy. So with this in mind I am feeling proud. Money Farm on audio is selling, I have just completed the audio edit for the production of CLAN DESTINE and The Office Zoo is in the pipeline to hit the audio market. I have to say Ray, the producer has a voice which will have you in stitches. Already people have contacted me to say they have discovered Office Stinkers and Office Freaky but definitely Geeky! Love it!

So today is that day of celebration where the bottom dance has been shimmied around the writing room and resulted in a few Jazz hand motions too! Some people may view such self-celebration as madness. Well if madness comes in the form or joy and misery is demonstrated by contained lack of self-appreciation and continued effort with no reward then the bottomy dance will win every time!

So how do you celebrate? I would love to hear how people reward themselves.
